There’s no better way to take in the sights of the Driftless Region in Southwest Wisconsin than in the open air on two wheels. And whether it’s gas or pedal powered, we’ve got some tips on having a great weekend exploring Wisconsin’s Outdoor Recreation Destination!
Wisconsin’s Driftless Area is one of the most beautiful places to head for a weekend getaway in the warm summer months or in the fall to check out the amazing fall colors. You’ll get the chance to check out several towns and small communities on your weekend trip and get a feel for the relaxing lifestyle the locals enjoy.
“It’s not the destination. It’s the journey,” Ralph Waldo Emerson said. But if you’re coming to Boscobel, it’s both!
If you’re coming from the Madison area on your motorcycle, the most direct route to Boscobel is to head northwest on Highway 14. Coming from the south? There’s also a great route to explore on Highway 61. Here’s an itinerary of stops and sights to see on your way from either direction.
Once you’re here, highways 60 and 133 provide great views and mirror the banks of the Wisconsin River, featuring amazing Driftless landscapes. Highway 60 was designated by the state as one of only two Scenic Byways in the state. It’s the perfect road to see beautiful landscapes, picturesque hillsides, and wild animals enjoying the outdoors.
We also have two Rustic Roads that take you around the Driftless Region. Rustic Road 55 and Rustic Road 56 are both in nearby Vernon County and feature views of scenic fields, beautiful farms, and local flowers and wildlife. There are also several other road tours and scenic byways to check out. Here’s a full list.
While you’re out on the beautiful roads of the Driftless Region, you should check out some of the historical landmarks in the area, like an old tobacco warehouse or one-room school house in Viroqua, the historical Crawford County Courthouse, or several round barns in Vernon County.
Ready to pedal your way through some beautiful views and scenic routes? Here are a few of the best cycling and mountain biking routes near Boscobel, in the heart of the Driftless region.
The area has choices for bike riders from rugged mountain trails to on-road routes and bike trails. There are several routes in Crawford County, off-road biking options in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve and Wyalusing State Park, and the 32-mile Elroy-Sparta State Trail.
While you’re out on the roads or trails, don’t forget to keep your eyes open for roadside vegetable stands. There are also farmers markets in several communities you can stop at to sample local produce, including one right here in Boscobel.
